‘We’re not Young’ Parody
“Tonight, we’re not young. We’re all somewhere in our 30s and nothing worthy. This ain’t fun. Tonight, we’re not young. I guess I’ll learn Photoshop. Maybe I’ll sell pot. Start a blog.”
lol
“words with friiiiiiieeeeeEeeEeEnds”

This was, by far, the best weekend I have had…maybe ever. I’ll start from the beginning. I decided to go to Charlottesville, VA to see fun. (2nd time this year) because I had fallen in love with Miniature Tigers and it was the last show of the spring tour. I asked my friend Chance to go with me as I had recently converted him to a fan of fun.. (<-The band’s name makes for awkward sentences.) We bought tickets to the sold out show for 5x face value a few days before the show. (Worth every penny.) Borrowed my mom’s HHR to save on gas and hit the road on a Saturday afternoon.
So we drove a couple hours and decided to stop and stretch out and refill on gas. Taking an exit that says it has gas, we exit the highway. We drive through what appears to be an area between towns with windy roads and very little sign of humanity. Luckily, just as we are about to panic and find the highway, we find a gas station. We go inside and don’t see a door marked “restroom” anywhere so we ask the cashier. She points to the side and tells us to walk straight back and make a turn. We go outside, walk to the side of the building and see nothing. No doors, no signs, no bathroom. We walk back inside where we notice a piece of paper hanging below a clock above the doorway into the back room that says “restroom”. We cautiously enter the back room and find a bathroom past the cooler and employee break area. Seems like a place customers shouldn’t be but the various hand written signs say otherwise. We buy our gas and get out of BFE.
We make it to Charlottesville and are ahead of schedule and excited about the show. The GPS is programmed to find the venue yet feels the need to take us down various dead end roads and attempts to send us the wrong way down a one way street. We have already spotted the tour buses so we know we are almost there. After a couple trips around the block, we find a parking deck. It has been raining and we have discovered the lack of functionality of the windshield wipers on my mom’s car. Between that and the idea of driving 3.5 hours home that night, we decide it’s best to find a hotel for after the show. (Life saving move.) Hotel booked. Stuff needed for the show gathered up. We set out to survey the venue and find our place in line.
We find the Jefferson Theatre with 20 or so people in line and a taco store next to the line. Perfect! We grab some tacos and head back out into the rain to eat our dinner while we wait for the doors to open. The rain had slowed but it is still hard to eat a taco in the rain so a couple nice guys behind us in line shared their umbrella as we scarfed down some mediocre tacos and chips. After finishing my dinner, I see someone from the opening band walking by. Another fan catches his attention and a picture and I follow suit. I didn’t expect to see someone from the band walking around and was therefore not prepared to be a proper fangirl. This caused a super awkward handshake which Charlie (Miniature Tigers) pointed out. Oh well, making an impression, right?
So, 8:00 doors open. We have discussed our plan of action and are ready to put it to use. We find our spot, front and center. I go off to buy merch and beer while Chance holds down the fort. With an hour before showtime, some of us decided it would be nice to sit down and rest. That lasted about 10 minutes before security made us get up. We made some new friends, Benn and Chris. A cool couple from PA. We also had some sort of stalker. Caroline, a 14?yr old who seemed more interested in watching us than the bands. Seriously, through the entire show she was turned around staring at us.
Miniature Tigers. They were incredible. A perfect pairing to fun.. Very Indie Pop. Probably the most entertaining bass player I’ve ever seen. Brandon Lee. There was also an adorable/unexpected kiss between the keyboard player and lead singer. Miniature Tigers played an awesome set. I was one of only a few people who seemed to know the band and therefore drew a lot of attention to myself as I cheered and sang along.
fun.. During the first song, the fire alarm went off. We noticed the flashing emergency lights but I didn’t see any smoke and on one else seemed worried so I continued to rock out with fun.. After the song, Nate (lead singer) mentioned that he thought it was the sound of crickets and we were the worst audience ever but then realized that it was the fire alarm. “The audience doesn’t care about the fire alarm. That’s not cool.” He says with a smile. They played an amazing mixture of songs from both Aim and Ignite and Some Nights along with a cover of You Cant Always Get What You Want. Jack (guitar) helped drum on the last song until Will’s drums collapsed. Will then threw his sticks out into the crowd. One of them hit my hand and disappeared behind me. I was bummed until I turned around to see Chance stuffing the stick down his shirt to hide it from the crazed girl behind us. Score! If you haven’t seen fun. play live, you are missing out. They are so full of energy and yes, fun.
So we headed out back to the bus to try our luck at getting autographs and pictures. I befriended a security guard immediately to get the scoop on the whereabouts of the bands. We hung out by the bus door with some new friends and got the autographs of Will, Nattie, Jack, and Andrew. At one point some drunk girl who had lost her husband made a run for the back door. She was quickly apprehended by security. My new security guard friend updated me that everyone had to “go” so the security could go home and that once the crowd clears there would be nothing stopping me from coming back and hanging out by the bus. (Good looking out security guard.) So we did just that. We acted like we were leaving, circled behind the tour bus and met up with Miniature Tigers by their van. We hungout and got the autographs of the whole band on my Miniature Tigers Tshirt. I’m still kicking myself for not getting pictures with the band but they were busy loading up and tired and I was trying to not be annoying. It was 2 am after all.
With the bands headed out, we decided to get the car, pick up some beer and head to the hotel. We walked back to the parking garage stairs to find that they are locked up. Ok, we will go in through the front. Also locked up. A small sign on a door informed us that the entire deck will be locked until noon tomorrow. $50 fee to have your car let out after hours. With $20 left and no access to our car and all of our stuff in the car, we began walking down the street to hail a cab. Chance nabbed a cab and we headed off to the hotel. Luckily, there was a Cook Out just down the street as 1 taco 7 hours earlier was not enough food. My cookies and cream shake was basically ice cream in a cup so I fashioned a spoon out of a hotel cup to eat some of it.
The next morning we dined on a dry orange and chewy sausage. Can’t expect much from a $90/night hotel. We caught a cab back downtown to kill some time until the car would be released and we could go home. When we arrived at the parking deck, 2 girls we had met the night before were also stranded outside the parking deck with a cooler of beer. They headed out to explore and told us to help ourselves. We grabbed a couple Coronas, opened them with a bottle of water and a parking deck support beam and headed into the shopping center to explore. After some interesting finds and 11 am beers, it was finally time to save the car.
Per my superstition, we had to get Starbucks before hitting the road so we found one down the road. 2 parking lots later we paid $1 to park the car for 5 minutes while I got my good luck mocha. We drove the 3.5 hours home. Since it was a weekend of firsts, we added driving from the passenger seat to the new adventures for Chance.
So that’s the story of our epic concert adventure. I suppose I should thank the full moon, fun., Miniature Tigers, and Benn and Chris for an amazing weekend that I doubt can ever be topped. *Bow*
I’m so glad someone recorded this! Burning to death while watching fun. play is not the worst way to leave this world.
